St. Jerome has expressed the concept of 'A Guardian Angel' as: "How great the dignity of the soul, since each one has from his birth an angel commissioned to guard it!" (Ref: Mat 18:10-11)
Our guardian angels can act upon our senses and upon our imaginations (remember your inner voice that keeps speaking to you subtly and helping you distinguish good from evil) --- not, however, upon our will, except by working on our intellect, and thus upon our will, through the senses and the imagination.
This is the function of the guardian angels; they are to lead us, if we wish it, to the Kingdom of Heaven guiding our every step on our pilgrim journey here on Earth.

Angel of God, my guardian dear,
to whom His love commits me here,
ever this day/night, be at my side,
to light and guard, to rule and guide.
